Lamton Laminate Flooring is a brand of laminate that has been around for almost 5 years. It started out as a simple own branding attempt of Chinese 8.3mm Laminate Flooring by Build Direct. At it's time in the late 1999 early 2000 the 8mm was the best that laminate had to offer.

The Lamton line came out with a simple offering of 6 colors in the 8mm, it really was a revolution the product was imported from China, the locking system was crisp and clean, equal to the Unilin system and at the time probably no patent paid (keep quiet about that).

The six colors covered the spectrum of colors needed in the USA market and really propelled Build Direct as an online volume leader of laminate flooring.The company seemed to stagnate in direction with the Lamton brand, no doubt nervous over all the patent law suits flying around in 2003-2005.

It was not until late 2006 that the reemergence of the Lamton brand came back into the limelight at Build Direct.Lamton is a clear proposition for a consumer and for Build Direct themselves. They can essentially go to any factory and try and create a private label program (order about 20 containers + at anyone time in a few colors) that private label program being the Lamton Logo and product.Laminate flooring as you know is a flooring product in planks in a box, what you choose to put on the box is up to the manufacturer - for example, Pergo, Wilsonart, Formica, etc. However if you order enough product at one time you can have the factory put your logo on the product. Essentially you or in this case Lamton can become the manufacturer.

The reason for the reemergence in late 2006 of the Lamton brand really followed the resolution of the Chinese factories to paying patents to Vilange or Unilin, this allowed Build Direct with confidence to go out once again and seek a Chinese supplier.However the market had changed, no longer was the tried and trusted 8.3mm of 1999 going to work, for the Lamton range to succeed into the next decade it needed to find a factory with the technology to make the latest and greatest in the laminate flooring offering.

2006 was the year of the Embossed and Registered laminate, for Lamton to have any impact in the USA it needed better it neeed more 2009, it needed the product the laminate flooring of the next decade.

The year 2010 will see all factories trying to compete over making what is called, 'narrow plank and beveled' - this is the new look of laminate flooring. With this micro-bevel as it is sometimes referred to and a wood grain finish, it is almost impossible to tell the laminate apart from the hardwood, this of course was the goal of all laminate manufacturers.Narrow Plank usually around 5" wide gives the appearance of real wood and the micro-bevel or beveled completes the appearance.

Lamton Laminate Floors again got in early on this look in late 2006, their 12mm Lamton Narrow Board Beveled Laminate flooring is perfect. It is made in China with European machines and it is perfect - it really is, OK there has been the odd issue with the locking system going together perfectly and the paper sometimes does not quite cover the bevel (only matter on dark colors) - but this is representative of less than 1% of sales.

It is a great product.The Europeans were slow to follow the Chinese on the narrow board and beveled look, Kronotex eventually came out with it’s Amazone collection, but it is too bulky, Kronoswiss adapted faster with their Swiss Plank Elite this is an underrated products, for value, 10mm 4 sided beveled, the Swiss Plank Elite by Kronoswiss is a good product.

The start of 2007 was a great year for Lamton it was back in the market and with two 12mm product lines.

The second one of the collection was weak, the Chinese factory chosen had poor ‘plates’ used to create the hand scrape appearance the line started out with 6 colors.

This line had not gone with a narrow board appearance already a mistake and the names were terrible, ‘Oak Walnut’ two tree, the Chinese translations were poor.

However for a Lamton 12mm Hand Scraped beveled laminate floor, this has enough and with a price point to the consumer in early 2007 of $1.29SF it was a winner. Just not on the same scale as the 12mm Narrow Board and Beveled.

This was the supreme collection the colors in this line are still all sold today buy Build Direct and consist of the original 6 colors in January 2007:

They did not just sell the laminate either all came with matching moldings, the price point of this laminate in 2007 was only $1.29SF to consumers, it was an absolute winner – to give you an idea Kronotex’s Amazone Collection 10mm Narrow board and Beveled sells to distributors for $1.80.

You can see at $1.29SF Build Direct was well below the market on price, 2007 was going to be a great year, a year of struggling supply but a great year.

Towards the end of 2007 start 2008 the popularity of the 12mm Slim Beveled laminate was so great that 4 additional colors were added:

It seemed an easy solution the sales were greatest in this product the price point was $1.29, what could go wrong……….. This we shall explore in the next article – because wrong it went.
